AN ECLECTIC mix of established acts and emerging artists took over Kendal Calling yesterday (Saturday).

Indie, dubstep, post-punk and drum and bass all collided to ensure the second day of the sell-out event went down in style.

The feel-good spirit of the event was encapsulated when 867 festival-goers donned fancy dress to break the world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Superman in the early afternoon.

On the main stage, headliners The Charlatans belted out hit after hit with the help of Pete Salisbury, former drummer with The Verve, who is filling in for Jon Brooks while he recovers from hospital treatment.

With their iconic blonde mop-topped singer Tim Burgess clearly loving every minute, the five-piece opened with the epic single Forever and played classic tracks such as One To Another and The Only One I Know, as well as Up At The Lake, in a nod to the festival's location.

Earlier on the same stage, Ash had the crowd dancing and singing their hearts out with a solid set featuring Girl From Mars, Orpheus and Burn Baby Burn.

British Sea Power, led by Natland brothers Neil and Scott Wilkinson, headlined the Calling Out tent in style with a homecoming gig to be proud of.

More than 100 people had to make do with listening from outside the tent, such was the demand for the show, which featured No Lucifer, Remember Me and All In It.

Before that, up and coming art rock trio London Grammar impressed as Hannah Reid's stunning vocals merged with moody electronics akin to The xx.

Mike Skinner, of the hugely popular but now defunct urban act The Streets, tore the roof off the Glow Tent with a devastatingly good DJ set, while elsewhere on the site people shuffled their feet outside one of any number of the pop up stalls and bars - including the brilliant Sailor Jerry area - which always go down a storm.

Speaking of storms, campers endured a 12 hour torrential downpour overnight which left many a flooded tent behind in its wake, when as the beautiful sunshine which had blessed the site at Lowther Deer Park turned its back on proceedings.

But it failed to dampen spirits, as determined revellers headed back into the main arena this morning to make the most of the festival's final day, with a line-up including Johnny Marr, Seasick Steve, Lucy Rose and the mighty Primal Scream.
