FISHERMEN from Barrow are celebrating today after netting £1m in the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle.

It comes just one week after Kendal supermarket worker Gail Colledge, 53, of Carnforth, scooped the life-changing prize.

'The Boys of Old Barrow' Robert McAloone, 46, Andrew Bell, 41, who works as a seaman on a windfarm; Michael McGarry, 60, a mechanical fitter and Will Middlehurst, 46, a pipe fitter, who are all from Barrow in Furness, said they are still stunned by the win.

The leader of the group of four, who have been friends for more than 20 years, revealed that he sent his nephew out to buy the ticket after he had forgot.

Robert said: "I had forgotten to buy a ticket as I was busy working and remembered literally minutes before the draw. I sent my 20-year-old nephew out to buy it – and thank goodness I did."

They are currently drawing up a shopping list of how they will spend their money with paying off mortgages and holidays at the top of the list.

Robert added: "I don’t think any of us can quite believe it. The news is still sinking in. And to think I almost forgot to get the ticket. It is just unbelievable.

"We are all stunned and are still thinking about the huge amount of money which we each have and how we will spend it."

Each of the syndicate members will receive £250,000.

Robert described the moment he discovered he had won and how he went home to mop the floor.

He said: "I had been to the local Post Office to buy something for my partner and just checked our ticket on the off chance.

"The assistant said they could not pay out and we would need to call Camelot.

"I went home and mopped the floor as we have been having work done on the house. I then thought I would call Camelot as I was waiting for the floor to dry. When I was told we had won and we had won £1m I just went quiet, I was absolutely stunned."

The men met fishing and formed their syndicate just a few months after becoming close friends.

Robert, a scaffolder, added: "Seventeen years ago we each won £3,000 on the football pools and we have had a few small wins on the EuroMillions but this is our first big win."

The syndicate always does a lucky dip and plays both Lotto and EuroMillions twice a week.

They bought their ticket from McDougal Newsagents in Rollinson Street.
