THE 130th Cartmel show went off with a bang as thousands of revellers made the most of the sun-soaked setting.

It was everything you would expect from a South Lakeland agricultural show as proud owners displayed their prized animals before an enthralled audience.

Sheep, horses and cows were the star attraction at the show, held at the world-famous Cartmel racecourse.

The tents were also filled with homemade arts and crafts, horticulture, vegetable displays and loveable chickens and pigeons.

Chairman Maurice Chapman thanked the crowds and volunteers for making the show 'one of the best in the north west.'

The champion horse, decked with intricate ribbons and braids, was a six-year-old shire called Cumpragh, owned by Lew and Nancy Harrison, of Clifton, near Preston.

"We started working on her at 5am but this award makes it worthwhile," said a jubilant Nancy.

"We have been coming here on and off for years but today is really special," added Lew.

The best bovine was awarded to Andre-Kate from a family farm in Witherslack. It is the first time the six-year-old heifer has scooped the award - to the delight of owner Wayne Inman.

"I'm over the moon," said Wayne, whose family farm dates back generations. "We bred her ourselves and she has had four calves."

The overall champion sheep on the field was Richard Batty's Suffolk One Crop ewe.

The three-year-old, hand-bred on Mr Batty's Red Hills farm in Skelsmergh, near Kendal, was also champion at the Westmorland County Show at Crooklands last year.

Mr Batty was only showing at Cartmel for the second time and this was his first win in the prestigious class.

"I'm absolutely delighted," he said. "It's a very good ewe, but you'd have to ask the judges why she is so special, I don't want to give anything away."

There was also fun for the family with a selection of food, fairground rides, a climbing wall and stores selling local produce.

The best in show in the lively poultry category was a black soft feathered bantam.

Elsewhere a hand-prodded Rhino rug was judged best in the Village Industries tent.

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron, 2013 president of the show, thanked the efforts of all involved.

"From the children baking brownies to the secretary who has not stopped, everyone has worked so hard making this day as good as it has been," he said.
