THE 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War on August 4 is inspiring a host of events in villages, towns and cities around Britain - and communities in South Lakeland, Eden, north Lancashire and the Dales are no exception.


Commemorations already arranged in these areas include talks, concerts, plays, recitals, exhibitions and special religious services.

Planned events around the region include:

  • Until September: 11.15am-5pm, Dalemain House and Garden. Newly extended museum features the history of the local yeomanry and the part played by Dalemain during the Great War, including material never before available to the public. Visit www.dalemain.com.

Using computer websites, books and newspaper resources, Library staff and Lancaster & District Family History Group will work together every Saturday morning in June to help people research their families in World War 1.   • June 8: 2.30pm Cartmel Quaker Meeting House. A talk by David Boulton on his book Objection Overruled about conscientious objection to military service during the First World War. All are welcome and refreshments will be served.

Book launch - a series of articles about the experiences of people from Penrith and surrounding villages during the war years has been compiled into a book, Home Thoughts and Foreign Fields. Event and books are free but donations are invited, which will go to armed service welfare funds.

  • June 28: 1pm, Royalty Cinema, Lake Road, Bowness. Performance of Wings, a 1927 romantic thriller set among the horror of the First World War. Tickets £5 and £6.50.

Lancaster City Museum, Market St. Meet the First World War Soldier Character on the centenary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, which sparked the outbreak of the Great War.   • June 28: 10am-4pm, Lancaster Castle. Armed Forces Day commemoration, including reflections on WW1 events.
  • June 29: 11.30am-12.30pm. Lancaster Priory Church. Service commemorating ‘the last days of peace’ before the Great War was declared.

  • Aug 2: St Oswald’s Church, Burneside. Burneside Heritage Group coffee morning from 10am-noon at  as part of the World War I commemoration and an exhibition, running from July 31 until August 4 between 10am-4pm.
  • Aug 3: Display of First World War memorabilia at St John’s Church, Old Hutton. Special prayers will be said during the 11am service.
  • Aug 3 and 4: ST Mark's Church, Natland. Exhibition to mark the centenary of the start of World War I on Sunday and Monday, August 3/4. The exhibition will remember the 17 men from the parish who lost their lives, two of whom are buried in war graves in the churchyard, and will also include information and photographs provided by villagers of their relatives  involved in the conflict. Everyone is also invited to afternoon tea at the vicarage garden. Donations are welcome for church funds.
    Aug 4: 10am and 9pm, St Andrew’s Church, Penrith. On behalf of Churches Together there will be a candlelit vigil and an evening service at St Andrew’s Church on the anniversary of the outbreak of war. The vigil in church and the signing of the memorial book will be from 10am and candles will be available for people to light. The closing service is at 9pm. There will also be a display of WW1 era photographs and memorabilia in the church.
  • Aug 4: 5pm, Blackwell Arts and Crafts House, Bowness-on-Windermere. David Hunt recites poems reflecting the tragedy of the First World War. Tickets: £16.
  • Aug 4: 7pm, War Memorial Gardens Carnforth. Ecumenical service to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War One, starting at 7pm. The service will be conducted by the clergy of all five town churches, with the Salvation Army Band providing music for the hymns and vocal accompaniment coming from the choral society.
  • Aug 4: 7.30pm, Wordsworth Museum and Art Gallery, Town End, Grasmere. The Bindman Talks: World War 1 in Grasmere.
  • Aug 4: 1pm-2pm, Lancaster City Museum, Market St. Origins of the Great War - a talk by David Shackleton.
  • Aug 4: 7.30pm, Vigil Service at St James' Church, Staveley, to commemorate the centenary of the start of hostilities in the First World War.
  • Aug 4: St Mary’s Church, Ingleton. Vigil and prayers for peace on August 4. Personal items are requested for a display of memorabilia.
  • Aug 4: Burneside Heritage Group will hold a commemoration of World War One at St Oswald’s Church Room in the village, including a coffee morning and display.

  • Aug 4: There will be special memorial services at Austwick War Memorial at 10am, Clapham Churchyard at 11am and Keasden Churchyard at noon to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War One.

Jeff Barnhart (piano) As part of Lake District Summer Music’s WW1 commemorations, a look back to 1914 when ragtime was in its heyday. Jeff will demonstrate such evergreens as Bowman's Twelfth Street Rag and Joplin's Magnetic Rag.

  • Sept 18: Penrith. Venue, time and admission charged are yet to be arranged.Distinguished journalist, historian and author Max Hastings will describe the circumstances leading up to the catastrophe that was the First World War.
  • Sept 28: 9.40am, Shap Wells Hotel, Shap. ’Cumbria’s Contribution To the Great War’, hosted by the Cumbria branch of the Western Front Association. The day will consist of lectures and displays: topics will include: Barrow (Munitions, Ships and Airships), Transport (moving troops and freight) and Cumbria’s Pals Battalion – The Lonsdales. Author Peter Hart will give an overall perspective on WW1 with a Cumbrian slant. Cost for the day: £25 including a full carver y Sunday lunch.
  • Sept 28-December 6: Abbot Hall Gallery. The Great War in Comics. An exhibition in conjunction with the Lakes International Comic Art Festival.
  • Oct 11: 1am-1pm, St Andrew’s Parish Centre, Penrith. The Penrith & North Lakes U3A will explore local issues during the Great War. David Carter will tell of Charles Graham Robertson VC who hailed from the Penrith area and served with the 10th Royal Fusiliers. There will also be talks on wartime agriculture and poetry.   • Nov 5: 10am-1pm, The Folly, Settle. Opening of exhibition - ‘Craven’s Part in the First World War’. Residents can tell their relatives’ stories and take along any memorabilia from the conflict.
  • Nov 6: 7pm-9pm, Rheged Centre, Penrith. No Food No War - a talk by historian and Western Front Association member Richard Preston. Entry £5 - (£2.50 goes to a military charity).
  • Nov 7: Brewery Arts Centre. Remembrance Weekend commences with Brewery Poets hosting a literary gathering.
  • Nov 7: Kendal Parish Church. Cumbria Choral Initiative commemorative exhibition put together by Cumbria Federation of Women’s Institutes.
  • Nov 8: 7.30pm, Kendal Parish Church. Cumbira Choral Initiative features Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem.
  • Nov 8: 7.30pm, The Chapel, University of Cumbria’s Bowerham Road campus, Lancaster. As part of WW1 commemorations, Lancaster and District Male Voice Choir perform Britten’s Ballad of Heroes.
  • Nov 9: Remembrance Sunday services, including 2pm at Penrith Town Hall. Civic Service of Remembrance with the Royal British Legion and uniformed organisations on parade followed at 2.30pm by the church service aqt St Andrew’s, Penrith.
  • Nov 9: 3pm, Alhambra Cinema, Penrith and Rheged Discovery Centre are putting on a series of films relating to the Great War era, including Lawurence of Arabia, Paths of Glory and Joyeux Noel.
  • Nov 11: St Anne’s Church, Ings. Levens Choir stage an evening of words and music related to the First World War.
  • Nov 12: Kendal Town Hall. Midday Concert Club brings the Dante Quartet and baritone Stephen Varcoe to perform the music of English composers Butterworth, Bridge, Holst and Gurney.
  • Nov 13: Yealand Church. Conductor Ian Joens and Eversley Choral perform Faure’s Requiem and Vaughan Williams’s cantata Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace).
