YOUNG people are invited to the last in a series of First World War-themed workshops at Penrith and Eden Museum, taking place on Tuesday (August 26).

The workshop, entitled  ‘After it was over - Remembering’, will create three-dimensional art works based on wartime trench maps.

They will use glue, thread and wire to make individual pieces and organisers say they should bring aprons or old shirts 'because it could be a bit messy'.

The workshop will also look at ways of remembering and using art to commemorate people and places. It runs from 1.30pm to 3.30 pm and the cost is £5, which covers materials. It is suitable for young people aged eight and over.

For more information, contact the curators at the Museum telephone: 01768-865105.

Over the past month, workshops like this have seen young people working with artist Karen MacDougall on a wide variety of WW1 themes. The first, on recruitment, let them explore the museum's collection of wartime photographs and posters, creating new posters and artwork.

The next - ‘Sent with Love’ - looked at the things sent to cheer up soldiers in the trenche; and the children tried knitting for themselves, using giant needles and bulky wool. They also made embossed cards, like the embossed tins sent with little gifts to the soldiers. During the third workshop, youngsters made beaded and embroidered pin cushions and ‘silkies’, embroidered postcards, just like those sent by the soldiers to their loved ones.

Lots of the children's work will be displayed at a World War One exhibition opening at the museum late in September.
