BUSINESSES have backed a campaign which is saying no to the construction of a proposed zip wire in the Lake District - branding it a 'fairground ride'.

Residents have already threatened to move from the idyllic village of Glenridding should Windermere-based Treetop Trek's proposals for four parallel mile long zip wires go ahead.

But now hotels, shops and charities have signed an online petition in support of the #noziphere campaign.

Among those who have contributed to the page on www.helvellyn.com are Chance for Change, a global charity that works with disadvantaged young people and The Bury Jubilee Outdoor Pursuits Centre, a charity acting on behalf of young people.

With an activity centre dedicated to helping hundreds of youngsters build their confidence and experience each year, Chance for Change UK programme coordinator Rab Anderson is quoted on the website saying if the zip wire goes ahead they will 'have to' shut their Glenridding centre.

"It is totally against what we're about and would mean this location is no longer suitable for our charity," he said.

Other objectors include Glenridding's the Inn on the Lake Hotel, The Glenridding Hotel, Glenridding House, Fairlight Guest House and Helvellyn Cottages.

The Inn on the Lake Hotel general manager Gary Wilson said: "I strongly believe that the product that is Ullswater needs to be protected.

"People visit the valley for the unspoilt scenery and the idea of peace and tranquility away from the fast pace of life in the city."

And Patterdale Village Store, Sharmans of Glenridding, Glenridding Mini Market and Ullswater Filling Station have also opposed the plans.

Ullswater Filling Station owner Neil Atkinson said: "I might be one of the few businesses who would gain from more daily visitors but I firmly believe this is the wrong place for this sort of development.

"People come here because of what we already have - and we shouldn't ruin it with this sort of fairground ride."

A public meeting will be held in Glenridding Village Hall on December 3 at 7pm and it will be attended by Treetop Trek director Mike Turner and Lake District National Park chief executive Richard Leafe.
