Bible: Arcade Fire (Sono)

This Montreal band has some strong supporters - they are highly rated by U2 and David bowie while Q Magazine this month suggested Neon Bible was an early contender for album of 2007.

And it's not difficult to understand why. This really is an album which grabs your attention right from the start and holds it.

Powerful, baroque and at time even epic, these emotionally-charged tracks are a heady mixture of driving rhythms, church organs, orchestral music, choirs, haunting backing vocals - a melange of instruments and sounds to blow you away.

There are shades of U2, The Waterboys, Bowie and even Prefab Sprout on No Cars Go.

Arcade Fire take their music seriously and write songs with so much going on in them that you can always find something new, even after repeated plays.

There isn't a poor track on Neon Bible but highlights include the urgent Keep The Car Running; the majestic Intervention (fantastic pipe organ, a song full of drama); Oceans Of Noise, which builds and builds like Bono and Co's With Or Without You; and the reflective Windowsill.

Win Butler's vocals are impassioned, while lyrically the songs are dark and deep - the band has taken a close look at modern society and does not like what it has seen.

You are bound to hear a lot more about Arcade Fire and Neon Bible in the weeks and months to come. For now, though, simply sit back and listen to a truly classic album.
