THE 56th Greenholme Gala and Agricultural Show had a dry day and good crowds. Jackie Taylor, show secretary for18 years was stepping down after this year. She said: "I've loved being secretary. The best part is after all the hard work is done, we get to the day, everyone turns up and has a great time. Greenholme is not only well supported by those who enter, but many in the local community and visitors."

New classes this year included a stick competition, which produced a large number of different types of sticks, to the approving looks and discussion of their finer points. There was also two dog classes. Committee member Keith Golding, thought these classes could be increased next year, as they proved popular.

President for this year's show, was Bernard Thornborrow of Tebay. He presented the trophies and thanked the committee for inviting him and for all their work in making the show a success. He said how much he had enjoyed walking around, and having a chat. He said he remembered helping his uncle with the rough fell sheep when he was a boy, and he congratulated the breeders of all the different breed of sheep for producing such fine animals. He also said how impressed he was with the standard of the cookery, craft, photographs and large children's section.

Jackie Taylor was thanked for her 18 years of work as secretary, and presented with a basket of flowers.

As always, Greenholme lived up to its reputation as being the centrer of excellence for the rough fell sheep. Rob Steadman carried off most of the honours, including the Holmes Cup for the best sheep on the field. Vic Guy won the trophy for the best female rough fell sheep.

H. Winder won for the best texel, and Rob Steadman the best 'any other sheep breed'. The young handler, a new cup presented to the show by Stanley Guy, was won by seven year old Frank Dunning. In the new Stick Classes, Ben Lucas won the prize for the Best Stick on the Field, with a wooden walking stick.

A jar of marmalade won the trophy for Megan Allen, for the best exhibit in cookery and produce and Ann Mooney won the cup for the best craft exhibit with a cross stitch picture. A photograph of children jumping into a swimming pool was judged the best photo in the show, taken by Julie Mawson and the best children's exhibit was a decorated boiled egg by Jenny Mounsey.

Competition is always strong between Orton and Tebay schools. this year the Relay races were both won by Orton, but the Tug of War winners were Tebay.

In its 65th year this friendly, family show continues to thrive. There were more than 1,000 exhibits, and local sponsors continue to give generously. Though one of the smallest shows in Cumbria, it is always well supported and an important annual event on the local calendar.
