AN INVITATION has been put out by Cumbria Wildlife Trust to ask people to join its sponsored Walk Across the Bay' on Saturday, May 12.

Morecambe Bay's cross-bay walk, in Cumbria, is internationally known and has been described as "one of the world's most wonderful journeys". The guide is Cedric Robinson, who is the 25th appointed Queen's Guide to the Sands and has been leading the walks since 1963.

People have walked across the sands of Morecambe Bay for hundreds of years. Before the arrival of the railway it was the main route to and from Furness. Now people cross for fun, and to raise money for charity.

In 2005, £3,000 was raised by 131 people, from all over the country, who walked across Morecambe Bay in aid of Cumbria Wildlife Trust. More than 400 walkers took part in the eight-mile trip from Arnside to Kents Bank. The trust organises a fund-raising group for the walk every year. This is the fifth year the trust has taken part.

Anyone who would like to take part in the event can telephone Cumbria Wildlife Trust on 01539-816300.
