TORRENTIAL rain and strong winds have forced the Met Office to issue a weather warning for vast swathes of Cumbria.

South-westerly winds of up to 70mph are set to batter the more remote, higher regions of the county and travellers are warned that this could lead to disruption on the roads.

All lines between Oxenholme and Windermere are blocked due to flooding with disruption expected until 5.45pm - two replacement buses are currently in service.

The Environment Agency has issued flood risk warnings for the River Kent and the River Bela, as well as the River Eden and tributaries from Temple Sowerby to the confluence with the River Irthing at Warwick Bridge including Langwathby, Lazonby, Kirkoswald, Armathwaite, Wetheral and Warwick-on-Eden.

National Rail have announced that the train line between Skipton and Carlisle is closed due to water on the line and it is not expected to reopen until 6pm at the earliest.

Windermere Lake Cruises have cancelled their trips for the day, and Windermere as a whole is predicted to be one of the worst hit areas, with heavy rain anticipated all day - expect roads to become waterlogged.
