HARRISON & HETHERINGTON LTD – CARLISLE STORE CATTLE & WEANLINGS Harrison & Hetherington had forward 757 cattle at their Weekly Wednesday Sale, comprising of 487 Store Cattle, Store Bulls and weanlings, 266 Calves and 4 Dairy Cattle. As well as the regular buyers together with some new purchasers ensured all rings were an excellent trade.

STORE CATTLE – At the weekly sale 254 store cattle were forward. Trade was described by many as the dearest seen anywhere this year with a large contingent of buyers around the ring. Trade topped at £1270 for a fantastic Charolais heifer from Messrs WJB Cleasby, Linden House, Temple Sowerby. WEANED CATTLE – Once again a very good show of 233 weanlings were forward which included one of the best show of 130 bulls seen in Carlisle for some time. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields sold a 13 month old Limousin bull for £1070 and Messrs Cleasby Linden House run of pure Limousin bulls topped at £1025 for an 11 month old. Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of calves with a smaller show of 266 forward. Continental calves were cheaper than last week’s excellent trade. Top price was £495 for a superb British Blue bull calf from Messrs E & J More & Sons, Maxwellbank, Lochmaben, Lockerbie. Strong black and whites were dearer than previous weeks topping at £222 for a pen of 7 from Fisher Farming Ltd, Smalmstown, Longtown.

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A large show of 488 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.

CAST COWS, BULLS & OTM CATTLE: Once again a large show of 355 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to over 20 buyers with over 40 accounts active with a plainer show on office. However trade for all classes would be slightly up on the week. M/s Graham, Miller Hill run of cows topped at 195.5p for a Limousin cross purchased by Bowland Foods. M/s Logan, Humebyers Farm, Kelso sold two outstanding Limousin cows selling for 791kg at 182.5p totalling £1443 bought by Woolley Bros.

M/s Thompson, East Unthank run of cows topped at 788kg at 178.5p totalling £1406 for a British Blue cross bought by Owain Llyr. M/s Murray, The Throp run of cows topped at 736kg at 175.5p totalling £1291 for a Limousin cross bought by Les Fell. Crowhall Farms run of cows topped at 167.5p for a Limousin cross purchased by Sean McGimpsey. M/s Norman, Little Orton Farm sold a Limousin cow for 162.5p bought by Mr Llyr.

Black and white cows were once again in Great Demand with a ring full of buyers for all classes. M/s Harrison & Sons, Down Hall run of Holstein x cows topped at 731kg at 135.5p rounding to £999 with others also achieving 127.5p purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and Sean McGimpsey. Bowness farms run of Holstein cows topped at 126.5p to Pickstock Ltd. M/s Wilson, South View Farm black and white cows topped at 762kg at 123.5p totalling £941to Les Fell with M/s Chappelhow, High Grounds run of Holstein x cows topped at 121.5p to Sean McGimpsey. M/s Dart & Son, Flothers sold the top priced Montbeliarde x cow selling for 827kg at 119.5p totalling £988 to Dawn Meats. A Good Show of 12 Stock Bulls were forward with M/s Irving, New Sandsfield sold top priced Limousin stock bull selling for 1029kg at 154.5p totalling £1589 to Pickstock. M/s Bragg & Sons, Aikton sold a Limousin stock bull for 151.5p also to Pickstocks. M/s Thompson, East Unthank sold a Limousin stock bull for 1053kg at 142.5p at £1500 also to Pickstocks.

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store and breeding sheep.

STORE SHEEP – A large show of fell hoggs were forward following strong demand from last week. Topping the trade of the day was a pen of Texel hoggs from M/s Hewer, Coal Fell, Hallbankgate achieving £79 ahead. Fell bred hoggs were also in great demand seeing Swaledale hoggs up to £50 from M/s Thornton, Dykecroft, Ravenglass. A large show of customers are eagerly awaiting store hoggs, with hoggs being sold at ease.

A nice entry of pens were forward for the show, kindly judged by Mr Shaun Cowin, Dunbia. The Championship ticket for Swaledales was awarded to Messrs Ritson, Baggra Yeat for his pen of 44.5kg hoggs which sold for £79 to the judge.

Taking the Championship ticket for Blackfaced hoggs was a pen of 44.5kg hoggs from TK & EM Story, Jackson Rigg which were purchased for £81 by Mr Robert Skelton.
