BUSINESSES are being urged to take on apprentices to match last year's intake by local MP Tim Farron.

The latest figures show that two new apprenticeships are needed each day for the rest of the year for there to be as many employed as in 2015.

In total, between August 1 and January 31, 2015, 440 apprenticeships started work within the constituency.

However, this leaves a shortfall of 360 apprenticeships which must be started before July 31 in order for there to be the same number this year as last.

In the full year 2014-15, 800 apprenticeships started in South Lakeland.

Tim said: "Apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity for young people and businesses alike.

"Apprenticeships provide young people with training while gaining experience in the world of work, and also benefit businesses, which gain access to skilled local labour.

"Iā€™m urging local businesses to take on new apprentices, so that young people have the same opportunities this year as last.

"Thanks to the Lib Dems in government, we saw a huge expansion of apprenticeships under the coalition ā€“ almost 4000 apprenticeships were created in our area in that time.

"The challenge now is to make sure that continues."
