I think most people who read my column, will agree that the social drinking clubs in our locality are very much part of our cultural heritage. Although, some of us may argue that their mainly working class patronage is not deemed as fashionable nowadays.

Well, to the section of society that thinks such establishments are in gradual decline - then think again.

For there is a thriving social club in Accrington town centre, the Canine Club, that certainly counters that argument.

The club was very well populated for an early Tuesday evening. Lots of friendly chit-chat in the spacious and comfy lounge area. And this was replicated when I strolled into the snooker and games room.

Now, I am sure you are wondering how the club got its name. However, it proved to be something of a mystery. With no-one being sure on how the club got its 'canine' tag. A tad bizarre I thought.

The club has been here since the 1960s and is currently East Lancs CAMRA's Club of the Year for the Hyndburn area.

I was met by barman, Mark McCallum, a cheery, affable soul, who was engaged in some friendly banter with the regulars.

Mark gave me a warm welcome and offered me a choice of four cask ales. I initially plumped for a pale ale from Oakham Brewery. Then I sampled the Moreland, Speckled Hen. Both were in exceptional condition, priced at £2.30.

Mark said: "Cask ale just keeps increasing in popularity. We shift four barrels a week (approx 280 pints). Three pumps rotate, with the the cask Tetley's permanently on, at £2.20 a pint."

Ah, how times have changed in recent times. Not too long ago, identifying a cask ale in these social watering holes was a treat to savour. Now, they all appear to have a cask ale selection - happy days.

What was really noticeable - and impressed me about this relaxing environment - was the amount of social interaction.

Bar manager Phil Daniels said: "We try and keep the art of conversation going. And as you can hear, it's very much in evidence - even if it's a little loud sometimes."

Yes, the friendly banter and general chat was certainly very much in evidence. It's what makes the Canine Club, undoubtedly a very popular social destination. You get a positive vibe about the place, no argument.

East Lancashire is fortunate to still have many thriving social clubs. And this was one such destination. I thoroughly recommend you pay them a visit. You would be barking mad not to.
