TRIBUTES have been paid to a 'vibrant' pillar of the community who has passed away at the age of 89.

Betty Spendlove was the councillor for Crake Valley for four years, taking over the role when her late husband, Noel, died in 2004.

Mrs Spendlove, who ran the Bistro at Ulverston Point before she became a councillor, died on March 28 at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

She was a lifelong educator and, according to a family statement, was 'a pioneering headmistress' at a school in Hastings from 1968 to 1983.

The well-respected councillor, who lived at Spark Bridge, is survived by her two children, Jane and John, and her five grandchildren - Caroline, David, Richard, Jamie and James.

She is also a great-grandmother to Arthur, Edward and Beatrix.

The family statement made after her death went on to say 'she will be sadly missed but her strength of spirit shines brightly'.

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron credits Mrs Spendlove with his political success.

"Betty was formidable, loyal and kind," he said. "When her husband Noel passed away in 2004, she continued his work and became the new councillor for Crake Valley at what was an unbelievably sad and difficult time for her.

"It is no exaggeration to say that she was instrumental in my becoming our MP in 2005. I will miss her terribly."

The Conservative district councillor for Coniston, Anne Hall, also paid tribute to Mrs Spendlove, whom she had known for many years.

Cllr Hall said: "She was a very vibrant lady and was very connected with her community.

"I worked for Age UK doing some rural work and Betty, even at her elderly age, took a course in exercise classes and taught the older people in the village."

Mrs Spendlove's funeral took place last Friday at the Lancaster and Morecambe Crematorium.

Donations in her honour are being accepted by the Alzheimer's Society and to contribute, contact Alan Fawcett Funeral Directors, Carnforth, on 01524 733048.
