A TASTE of Italy is on the way to Ulverston after plans for a new cafe with wood-fired pizza oven met with approval from planners.

The Italian-style venue serving Cumbrian-roasted coffee is to open at a former bicycle shop at The Gill, under the name Bici - Italian for bicycle.

Applicant Katrina Allison hopes to attract a variety of customers, including cyclists, and the cafe exterior is to feature a full-size bike as a sign.

According to planning documents, the kitchen will produce 'minimal odours' as there will be no deep frying and the pizza oven's high temperature creates 'negligible' cooking smells.

Unsold, perishable food is to be given to charity or people in need of food, and the cafe's decor will be based on 'contemporary, industrial design'.
