HOUSEHOLDERS across South Lakeland are responsible for the waste that is generated and accumulates on their premises.

Anyone having building work done should ensure that the people taking waste away are licensed to do so – the waste carrier should have their licence available to show but members of the public can also check with the Environment Agency on 08708-506-506.

In addition, there are four Household Waste Recycling Centres in South Lakeland at Kendal, Ulverston, Ambleside and Grange-over-Sands. Most types of household waste can be disposed of there.

They are free for householders to use and permanently staffed, with assistance provided for anyone needing help.

The council also has a bulky household waste collection service. Collections are made by the Right2Work charity and a single collection of up to three items costs £25. Further information about this service is available from the council’s website, or by calling 01539-733333.

There are also several other charities offering to collect items suitable for re-sale or re-use.

For more information about how to dispose of large household waste items, see the SLDC website. Visit

Or to report a fly-tipping incident call SLDC’s customer contact centre on 01539-733333 or the Environment Agency on 0800-807060, providing details of the location and a description of the waste.

Anyone seeing a suspicious vehicle should get a description and the registration number. Those reporting incidents are warned not to put themselves at risk and should not touch the waste in case it contains hazardous or dangerous materials.
