Ofsted inspectors have slammed an ‘inadequate’ Carshalton school for failing to prepare children for the next stage of their education.

Rushy Meadow Primary School was given the lowest rating after reviewers from the education watchdog criticised staff for being unable to ensure pupils made significant progress during their time at the centre.

By the end of year six pupils made little progression in reading and writing. They were also in the bottom 10 per cent of schools in regards to advancements in mathematics.

Inspectors noted attendance had been consistently below average and ‘showed no signs of improving’ and ‘leaders had been too slow to address persistent absences’. The report also blasted headteacher Kay Campbell for being too slow to improve children’s outcomes.

It read: “She has not addressed the significant issues that the school presents, particularly in relation to the quality of assessment systems, variability and learning and poor pupil attendance.”

Inspectors further commented on a newly implemented behaviour policy, which did not significantly reduce incidents of poor actions inside and outside the classroom.

The mixed-sex school had previously been awarded a ‘good’ rating following an inspection in November, 2011.

A Sutton Council spokesman said: “It is disappointing that Rushy Meadow School received an ‘inadequate’ rating from Ofsted however we are working with the Governing Body and the Cirrus Primary Academy Trust to ensure that the school receives the support and capacity it needs to improve.

“The Government has decided that the school will become an Academy under the Cirrus Primary Academy Trust and we have every confidence that the trust will make the necessary improvements quickly to provide the quality of education our pupils deserve.”
