TAILBACKS of up to five miles were reported on the A590 on Bank Holiday Monday following a collision between a car and a motorbike.

Shortly before midday, police were called to the collision at Hincaster, and the westbound carriageway was closed while emergency services dealt with the crash.

The eastbound carriageway also experienced heavy traffic, and further traffic jams hit the nearby junction 36 of the M6 as queues built throughout the afternoon.

An air ambulance was called to assist the motorcyclist, who was said to be from Yorkshire. He was taken to hospital with injuries described as serious but not life threatening.

Motorists could be seen waiting out the delays by occupying themselves outside their vehicles on the A590, which had come to a standstill.

Traffic began to clear the site at approximately 4pm.
