CUMBRIA County Council has appointed Eric Wright Civil Engineering Ltd as stage one principal designer and contractor for the replacement Ford Bridge at Burneside.

This design stage will include: ground investigation works to assess the necessary foundations, structural form and hydraulic modelling to consider the flood risk impact in conjunction with existing structures up and down stream of the bridge.

The design will require detailed liaison with a number of statutory stakeholders.

The aim is to complete the design stage by May 2018 to allow works on site to start in the summer when river levels are lower and to mitigate the environmental impact to the watercourse.

Ford Bridge remains on schedule to be fully re-opened in 2018 and exact dates will be finalised during the design stage when all aspects of the delivery can be accurately determined.

A spokesperson for Cumbria County Council said it would maintain communication with the local community and businesses throughout the process to provide updates on the progress of the works.
