A WELCOMING South Lakeland primary school has been praised for teaching its pupils 'to treat everyone with respect.'

An Ofsted inspector has concluded that Grange CofE Primary School 'continues to be good' in a report published this week.

"You lead a welcoming and inclusive school with strong Christian values," inspector Elizabeth Stevens said in a letter she wrote to head teacher Phillipa Summers. "Through initiatives such as working with the local foodbank and strong overseas links with a community in Nepal, you teach pupils to be caring and to treat all with respect."

The school was also praised for the way it has addressed issues raised at the last inspection, pointing out that teaching in mathematics, reading and phonics has improved.

"You have taken just the right steps to raise standards in reading, including phonics," Ms Stevens wrote. "Across the school, you provide a wide array of interesting and well-chosen books to engage pupils and it is clear that pupils read for pleasure."

She recognised how the staff do their best to offer an interesting curriculum for the pupils.

"Pupils enjoy coming to the school and say that learning is fun," she wrote. "This is because you and your staff have planned an interesting and engaging curriculum.

"Pupils relish the many visits and trips that you plan and enjoy after-school clubs, such as judo and gymnastics.

"Teachers plan engaging activities which match the development needs and interests of children.

Mrs Summers said: "I am delighted with the report and extremely proud of all the children whose enthusiasm makes teaching and educating them for the future such a privilege.

"We know that our school is a welcoming place to learn and that morals and values are at the heart of what we do so it is only right that this has been highlighted in the report."

To improve, the school should ensure that pupils in Key Stage 1 are given more opportunities to develop their reasoning and problem-solving skills in mathematics.

It added that in writing Key Stage 1 pupils should be given more opportunities to develop their skills by writing at length.
