Spring has finally arrived and all across the county native golden daffodils can be seen bobbing their trumpet heads in the breeze. Head out into the countryside this Easter to see newborn lambs frolicking in the fields. Families of all ages can go for a walk and look out for animals and birds including rabbits, badgers, foxes, and even otters. The popular tourist attractions will be opening their doors for the new season to welcome visitors, young and old, with a host of activities on offer.

Now in its fifth year of opening to the public, Old Hall Farm at Bouth offers visitors a family day out where lost and forgotten farming techniques are demonstrated, using the power of Shire horse, steam, and good old hands-on hard work! Feed the animals, help bring in the crops, try traditional butter making and see the North’s largest collection of vintage machinery and tractors.

Meet the herd of Jersey cows, and their adorable doe-eyed calves, which provide the creamiest milk for the ice cream, made in the farm parlour. From cow to cone - flavours include the classic mint choc chip and strawberry and more unusual new season flavours including Lotus biscuit flavour and lemon meringue pie. Old Hall Farm is open daily from 10am to 5pm at Bouth just off the A590 near Ulverston. Visit: www.oldhallfarmbouth.com.

Find out all about the strange and wonderful creatures that inhabit our coast, lakes and rivers at the Lakes Aquarium at Lakeside near Newby Bridge. You can make a day of it by choosing to arrive by an old-fashioned steam train from Haverthwaite station or aboard one of the Windermere Lake Cruises departing regularly from jetties at Bowness or Ambleside.

Experience what it’s like to be under water without getting wet in the glass tunnel and watch the amazing, often comical, diving ducks in action as they dart and dive for their food. Local fish on display include predatory pike from the lakes and Thornback Rays that can be found locally in Morecambe Bay.

Creatures from around the world include clownfish, instantly recognisable by their orange and white stripes, leaf cutter ants and piranha fish. The Lakes Aquarium is also home to a pair of Oriental small clawed otters, which inhabit mangrove swamps in South and Southeast Asia.
