THE Westmorland Gazette's Readers to the Rescue campaign has been nominated for a 'Making a Difference' award.

The nomination coincides with the annual Local Newspaper Week which celebrates the role played by local newspapers in communities across the UK and the value of highly trusted local journalism.

To celebrate the power of local newspapers to campaign for positive change in the communities they serve, the annual Making a Difference award invites members of the public to vote for their favourite local newspaper campaign from the past year.

The winner of the online public vote, which is now open, will be announced at the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards on May 18 by News Media Association chairman David Dinsmore.

The Gazette's Readers to the Rescue campaign raised more than £40,000 for Kendal Mountain Rescue Team. The money is to pay for a state-of-the-art new vehicle which will act as a ‘mobile base’, allowing for better communication between team members and fellow rescue teams during rescues and increasing the chances of successful outcomes.

Voting closes on Wednesday and to vote for the Gazette's campaign visit: http://www.localnewspaperweek.co.uk/
