1 From Longlands Hotel turn left on the Carnforth road. Cross over the M6 flyover then turn right down the driveway to Tewitfield Farm. Turn left immediately after a gate before the farm along a hedged track. Go into a field and head diagonally to a stile and bridge under the railway then over a stile to the A6. Turn left and walk along the roadside for 220 yards to the start of the dual carriageway. Cross the road with care and walk all the way up Snape Lane, then turn left past St Mary’s Catholic Church. At the speed delimiter sign turn right and cross a fence stile on to the footpath signed (currently broken off) Peter Lane and Crag Foot going alongside the high wall on the right. At the top of the slope turn sharp right and walk along a grassy path above the wall on the right. Go through a plywood kissing gate and then a gate to the road. Turn right and walk 100 yards down to a bend in the road then turn left onto the uphill path signed Leighton Hall. Cross the meadow to the trees ahead, go through a kissing gate and sit on one of the five memorial benches to enjoy the view over Leighton Park with its deer and hall and the RSPB bird reserve of Leighton Moss.

2 Go back down towards the roadside gate and turn left at the fingerpost signed Deepdale Woods. Walk down through the woods to a gate into a field and along a grassy track to a gap stile into woods. Follow the path down to Yealand Redmayne, to the left of a white house, dated 1666. Turn right to go down the road then continue along Well Lane (signed No Through Road) passing left of a pump and across a lane to a fence stile. Walk across two fields then along the hedge on the right in the third field. Go through a gate in the right corner then left over a stile to a hedged path leading to Rose Acre Lane. Cross the lane, pass St John’s Church then turn left down Dykes Lane and continue to the A6.

3 Cross the road carefully and walk along the lane beside a bungalow (with a fine model of Ambleside Bridge House in the garden). Go through a metal palisade gate and along a track leading to a field facing the M6. Turn right at the bottom of the field, passing under HV power cables, through the M6 underpass then up to the Lancaster Canal. Turn right and walk along the towpath past Tewitfield Locks. The eight locks were the only locks on the 57 miles waterway and lifted the canal 75 feet over three quarters of a mile. Walk under the flyover next to the M6 to where the canal now ends since the building of the motorway in 1968. Turn left to return to the Longlands Hotel.
