POLICE are investigating a burglary in Kirkby Stephen where an attempt was made to steal a cash machine.

The incident occurred at approximately 2.45am today (15 June) at the McColl’s store on Market Street.

Offenders forced entry to the store and have used cargo straps attached to a white Ford Transit van to remove the ATM from its fixed base. The offenders made off from the location, without the ATM, following being disturbed. Considerable damage was caused by the offenders during this incident.

The van used in the incident was stolen from outside an address in Brough prior to the incident in Kirby Stephen. It has subsequently been recovered by officers.

Detective Inspector James Yallop said: “We are appealing for anyone who has any information on this incident to get in touch in order to assist with our enquiries.

“At this time it is not believed that this has any connection to the Appleby Horse Fair.

“This incident is the latest in an ongoing organised crime trend which has occurred across the north of England. We are working closely with a number of forces to identify those responsible.

“As well as any information on what occurred in the early hours of this morning, we would also like to hear from anyone who has noticed anything suspicious in the area over the past week.”

Police are appealing for any witnesses that may have seen any suspicious activity in the area.
