TWELVE months after nearly losing his life in a horrific hit and run an Ulverston paramedic is preparing to ride more than 150 miles to thank the people who saved him.

On July 26 last year a speeding motorist smashed Jack Talbot, 25, from his bike as he rode in Priory Road.

On the anniversary of the crash he and 30 others from Barrow Central Wheelers cycling club will set out from Walney, their goal ultimate goal to reach Wallsend, in Newcastle.

He said: "I'm surprised at my progress, looking at other people's recoveries. I think I've been determined and that has helped me. I've worked so hard to get where I am as a paramedic."

Before the crash Mr Talbot had not been in Ulverston long, working as a paramedic in Furness for the North West Ambulance Trust.

John Edward Burns, who drove into Mr Talbot, was jailed for nine and a half years last October. He says since recovering from such a traumatic head injury he has a much greater appreciation of just how serious they can be.

He said: "It gave me much more of an appreciation for head injuries. I have a much lower threshold. Because of what happened to me I'm more understanding of how bad they can be."

Determined to thank the crew at the Great North Air Ambulance he took the decision to organise a charity cycle from coast to coast, hoping to raise as much money as possible. Initially just himself and his father in law, the group has grown to more than 30, comprised of members of the Wheelers, as well as friends and well wishers. He has also found support from Torq Fitness, who have provided him and the team nutritional support for the ride.

Setting himself a goal of £3,000 he has already raised more than £600, but, is hopeful even more can be generated for the charity who saved his life.

He said: "This show just how valuable a resource they are for us guys in Cumbria. We knew it was there but take it for granted, but any of us could need it."

Mr Talbot and his cycling team will set off from Walney at 4am on Thursday July 26.
