THE Adventures of Doctor Dolittle presented by outdoor theatre group Illyria takes place tomorrow (Friday, August 3) at 7pm, at Lowther Castle, Penrith. When Dr John Dolittle, of Puddleby on the Marsh, is taught by his wise old parrot, Polynesia, how to talk to animals, news of his skills spreads far and wide and animals across the world ask for his help. He buys a leaky old ship and together with his trusty crew he sets forth on his adventure, on a mission to heal illness, spread compassion and gain a greater understanding of the animal kingdom. TRAVELLING company The Three Inch Fools return to Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass, with a new production of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, on Sunday (August 5, 6pm), on the castle lawn. Five actors with all manner of musical instruments perform this comic tale of runaway lovers, beguiling potions and a rather unfortunate individual who gets turned into a donkey. EXPERIENCE the life and times of the English Civil War period on Saturday and Sunday (August 4 & 5) from 11am-4pm. Re-enactment society the Sealed Knot head to Ulverston's Ford Park to set-up camp and re-enact life and events from the 17th century. LOWTHER Castle, near Penrith, once again opens its gates to summer Picnic Cinema, giving the audience the chance to enjoy a cult film in a stunning setting in the outdoors. COCKERMOUTH & District Agricultural Show takes place on Wednesday (August 4) at Fitz Park. This traditional show has classes including horticulture, horses, sheep, cattle, industrial crafts, in fact everything to suit all the family. Judging starts at 9.30am along with the British Showjumping (BSJ). The grand parade starts at 2pm in the main arena. Plus there’s foxhounds and terriers, sheep clipping demonstrations, Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling, as well as the usual trade stands, marquees, food and refreshments.
