VICTIMS of domestic abuse are being offered support by an affordable housing provider.

South Lakes Housing says it is supporting around 20 tenants - both men and women - who are experiencing abuse in their own homes.

The social landlord has given its backing to a new national campaign called Make a Stand, launched by the Chartered Institute of Housing, with the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance and the charity Women's Aid, to help tackle domestic abuse.

Cumbria Police deal with more than 17 incidents every day, on average, says South Lakes Housing, which has pledged to:

- put a policy in place to support abused residents

- let staff and residents know about national and local support services

- and support staff who are going through domestic abuse.

South Lakes Housing, which manages 3,000 homes, has also appointed a domestic abuse champion, Vicky Battista. She said: "By signing up to Make a Stand it shows our customers and staff that we are here to provide support and guidance in helping those experiencing domestic abuse towards a brighter future."
