GRASMERE is preparing to welcome thousands of visitors for its annual ‘Grasmere Sports’ show.

The event, which is steeped in history and tradition, is taking place this Sunday (August 26)on Grasmere’s Sports field on Stock Lane.

The programme is packed with a selection of activities for all the family and the event is expected to attract in the region of 5,000 visitors.

Heading the programme will be the traditional Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, hound trails, fell running for both adults and children, the dog show, children’s sprint races, and the ‘long-leap’ for youngsters. New acts for 2018 include the H&M dog display team and ‘Dangerous Steve’, who juggles fire and chainsaws.

There will also be an array of trade stands, a beer tent and veteran car static display.

Car parking will be free on the day.

Following record weather conditions across the whole of the UK, show manager George Gale is keeping his fingers crossed for fine weather and anticipating high attendance numbers.

“We are expecting many thousands of visitors to this year’s Grasmere Sports and with a jam-packed schedule and – fingers crossed – sunny conditions, there should be something for everyone,” he said.

“The event has always been extremely popular. Its history and heritage place it as one of Cumbria’s most famous events and this year, we have even more fantastic activities.
