100 YEARS AGO - 1918
The blackberry harvest has begun. On Saturday, in a secluded corner towards the south end of the Winster Valley, a young lady in spectacles and two or three children of tender years, were observed industriously exploring the bramble hedges. Before they ceased their labours they had a big bright galvanised bucket filled to the brim with fruit.
50 YEARS AGO - 1968
The “fixed penalty”system for parking and lighting offences will be introduced in Kendal on Sunday under the new procedure. A motorist will have the opportunity of paying a £2 fine direct to the Clerk to the Justices.
25 YEARS AGO - 1993
Kendal’s popular Helme Chase Maternity Hospital looks virtually certain to shut down before Christmas following a decision by the South Cumbria Community Health Council not to oppose the closure. Members of the CHC voted 12-7 in favour of raising no objections.
