100 YEARS AGO - 1918
The latest addition to the natural history department of Kendal Museum is a small set of shells from New Caledonia. These shells, which have been presented by Mr W.H. Heathcote, were a gift to him from the late E.L. Layard, who for 15 years was British Consul in New Caledonia.
50 YEARS AGO - 1968
Although there are no signs yet of official protests in Westmorland against the two tier postal system, which will start a week on Monday, the prediction is five-penny letters will be sent only when absolutely necessary. It is felt there will be little difference - apart from a 1d increase -because already under the present system letters bearing the 4d stamp seem to take longer to reach their destination than those with a 3d stamp.
25 YEARS AGO- 1993
Bosnian refugees have moved out of Kendal’s Howard Home nearly a year after fleeing their war ravaged country. Three houses have been found in the town for the families who thought their stay in South Lakeland would not exceed six months
