A NORTH Lancashire teenager has been named fourth in his age category at the World Street Dance Championships.

Jay Mayor, 13, competed against 100 other dancers from around the world in Glasgow to secure the placing at the Untied Dance Organisation’s competition.

Jay has been dancing since he was just four and has been competing for the past three years.

His mum, Jennifer Mayor, runs Jennifer’s Dancers dance school and Jay attends her classes in Kendal, Milnthorpe, Carnforth and Morecambe.

“He’s just grown and gone from strength to strength really,” she explained. “In order to be able to get to the worlds you have to qualify at the regional qualifiers and he won first place at that.

“The standard is really high so when he got through to the final, we were really quite shocked and to get fourth was fantastic.”

She said that her son had to freestyle to a piece of previously unheard music as part of the competition and she said he was ‘in a bit of shock’ when he found out how he had done.

“They wanted to see that you have got musicality,” Jennifer said. “There’s lots of different beats and they wanted to see you dance to those beats.”

Jay, who lives in Bolton-le-Sands with his mum, trains four or five times a week in lessons but at home he will dance for at least an hour each night.

“With it being the summer holidays we literally drove around England taking him to lots of different classes,” Jennifer said.

She explained that her son would like to be a professional dancer and would also like to follow in her footsteps and teach as well.

On October 30 the young dancer will be performing alongside dance troupe Flawless on their tour in Preston.

Flawless competed in the third series of Britain’s Got Talent in 2009.

They made it to the final of the competition appearing alongside fellow street dance troupe Diversity.

Diversity went on to win ahead of Scottish songstress Susan Boyle.
