A FATHER and daughter secured English championship titles following the final fell race ‘counter’ of the season on Saturday.

Kendal’s Mark Roberts, who runs for Borrowdale, wrapped up the V50 and V55 titles with a 23rd position finish at the Cautley Horseshoe Race.

He completed the 4.7-mile (2,641ft of climbing) course, which involved climbs to the top of Yarlside, Cautley Fell and Dummocks, in a time of 48-05.

And although his daughter Kelli, who runs for Helm Hill, finished second in the ladies’ race behind Keswick’s Hannah Horsborough – 43rd in 51-07 – she had still done enough throughout the season to triumph overall.

She was 63rd in 52-52 with Ribble Valley’s Nicola Jackson coming in third in 54-20.

Mark, who has just had a month training in the Pyrenees, said: “I am not sure if this is the first time a father and daughter have won titles in the same year but I can’t think of any other. I am very happy for Kelli.”

Staveley’s Rob Jebb won the V40 title and came close to winning Saturday’s race. He was 50 seconds clear at the top of Yarlside and was only caught at the bottom of Dummocks and had to settle for third behind Keswick’s Mark Lamb (44-19) and Ambleside’s Matthew Elkington (44-22). The English title was secured by Keswick’s Carl Bell, who was fifth.

Milnthorpe’s Wendy Dodds, who runs for Clayton-le-Moors, won the FV65 championship with a 211th place finish in 1-10-10. There were 274 competitors.
