I REFER to Windermere Civic Society’s concerns about the proliferation of tables and chairs obstructing pavements (Gazette, September 6, 'Cafe question').
Not for the first time I would remind everyone that some years ago Cumbria County Council adopted, as part of its policy, the Guidelines of the Ministry of Transport’s document; ‘Inclusive Mobility’.
This document gives clear guidance on what constitutes an obstruction, giving details of dimensions and so on.
If the civic society, or anyone else, believes there is a pavement obstruction they can complain to CCC’s Help Line on 0845 609 6609.
The council should then issue a warning to the owner of the obstruction. If this warning is ignored the council should remove, and confiscate the illegal obstruction.
