AS PART of the Cumbria People's Vote Group, I took part in a survey of local people at the Birdcage in Kendal on Saturday, September 22. We asked simple questions, such as is Brexit going well? Will it be good for jobs, the NHS, Kendal and, finally, should there be a People's Vote on the final deal?

Your readers may be interested to know that 97 per cent of those who responded thought Brexit was going badly. Only 13 per cent thought it would be good for jobs, 15 per cent for the NHS and 10 per cent thought it would be good for Kendal.

Most significantly 76 per cent of those who had an opinion thought that they would like a People's Vote on the final deal. This applies to both Leavers and Remainers.

These figures are in line with the statistics for the other four towns in Cumbria where we have asked the same questions. They are also similar to national opinion polls, which show that there is now a majority across the country that before we take the final decision to leave the EU the public should have the final say.

Of the 144 who supported a People's Vote in our poll, 20 had been Leavers at the time of the referendum.

Expert on European matters Lord Roger Liddle told an audience in Lancaster Town Hall last week that the country was now in a crisis similar in magnitude to that in May 1940.

The People's Vote is an amalgam of people of all parties and none. Given the absence of creditable Government leadership, we believe the only democratic way forward is to put the terms of any Brexit agreement back to the people for the final say.
