RESIDENTS of Appleby had the chance to have their say on the redevelopment of a historic building which lies at the heart of the Eden town.

Historic England have deemed it necessary for Moot Hall, a 16th century building, to undergo repairs as the structure is at high risk.

The public have had a chance to have their say on three possible options on how the building could look like.

The options were drawn up by Crosby Grainger Architects, of Kendal, who were commissioned by the Appleby Heritage Action Zone to do modifications to create more space on both the north side and the south side of the establishment.

All options include moving the existing disabled public toilet and installing an interior lift. And two of the options would see a first-floor public exhibition space created as well as a public gallery being reinstated.

Appleby mayor Stanley Rooke said he believed it was crucial for residents to have had the chance to give their opinion and feedback.

"Comments from the public have taken off, we've received plenty of feedback from residents who clearly care and have an interest in Moot Hall," he said.

"Personally, I would want the most minor cosmetic changes done to the council chamber as I want to keep that room as close to its original design as possible."

There is no information on how much the redevelopment would cost until the architects produce a final design, and even then it will go back under public scrutiny before the council makes its final decision.

The final design is expected to come out in November.
