THE careful conversion of Kendal's former nurses' home has earned an award for developer Russell Armer Homes.

The Kendal-based company created seven apartments and three houses at the late 19th century, Arts and Crafts-style property at Tenterfield, off Brigsteer Road.

Russell Armer also transformed the "neglected and dilapidated" site by demolishing empty NHS offices and building eight brand new homes in the grounds.

The Tenterfield development, in Kendal's leafy conservation area, picked up the prize for best residential development in Cumbria at the United Kingdom Property Awards.

Richard Wood, architect for Russell Armer Homes, said: "We’re delighted by this win as it’s a prestigious award category that attracts top-quality entries.

"We’re especially proud of the effort that’s gone into creating an attractive development that preserves the original building’s charm, while providing characterful contemporary accommodation.

"From being a neglected and dilapidated plot, Tenterfield now makes the most of this beautiful setting and is home to a new generation of residents."

The accolade will be presented at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, on October 26.

The UK awards are part of the International Property Awards, which are split into regions including Africa, Asia Pacific, Arabia, Canada, Caribbean, Central & South America, Europe, the UK and the USA.

The highest scoring five-star winners from each category of the awards will be automatically put forward for re-judging against the international five-star winners.
