A KENDAL duo has completed a gruelling 60 kilometres hike and raised nearly £11,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Rachel Thomas, 27, and her brother Paul, 25, of Helme Drive, along with family members and friends, completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks - Pen-y-Ghent (694 metres), Whernside (736 metres) and Ingleborough (723 metres) - in 11 hours and 20 minutes.

The next day, despite aching libs and tired legs, they completed a further 12 miles along the Lancaster Canal to reach their 60-kilometres target.

The group originally aimed to raise £2,000 but upped the target to £10,000 as donations came flooding in. The current total raised is £10,945.

"The MS Society is a charity close to our hearts as our mum/auntie suffers from the condition and this walk was in honour of her 60th birthday," said Rachel, who now works in Southampton as a tools and hardware buyer for Kingfisher.

Accompanying Paul, now a civil engineer for Laing O'Rourke in London, were their cousins Helen Middleton, 28, and Lauren Middleton, 24, who both live in Leeds; Sam O’Kane, 27, who lives at Leeds; Sam Hammett, 28, who lives at Southampton; and Dan Marsden, 24, is still hoping people will donate. who also lives at Leeds.

After the walk Lauren commented: "On the second day of our walk we met a lady who was walking with a stick. She noticed our t-shirts and asked what we were raising money for. When we told her it was for the Multiple Sclerosis Society she said: 'Thank you for looking after me'. This really helped our motivation over the last few miles of our walk."
