MORE than 100 people joined together at the Ambleside Parish Centre for the multi-agency launch of a free comprehensive guide for the over 50s in the Lakes area.

It has been created by Juliet Cunningham, the centre's Older Person’s Project Co-ordinator, and edited by a team of local volunteers.

Juliet also holds an older person’s advice and information drop-in on the first and third Wednesday of the month in Ambleside Library from 10am to 12.30pm.

The ‘Over 50s Local Guide for the Lakes Parish Area’ includes contact details for vital services and lists local organisations, and provides information and practical advice to help for older people’s everyday needs.

It is divided into separate sections, covering home, safety, health, getting around, money and clubs, societies and volunteering opportunities.

Launching the guide, Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron spoke of the number of young people leaving the area and the need for older people to look after themselves - and each other.

He said that by 2020, South Lakeland will have more people aged over 50 than under but with average house prices of £250,000 and average household incomes of only £26,000, it was difficult to achieve an age-balanced community.
