LAKELAND Sinfonia concert series continue on Saturday (October 20, 7.30pm) featuring the Hallé Orchestra. This spectacular concert has a very British theme. An intriguing fantasia by Purcell is in splendid new colours, thanks to the concert’s conductor, Andrew Manze. Dvorak's glorious Cello Concerto was first performed in London, and will showcase soloist Jian Wang amazing talent. Finally, Vaughan Williams' second symphony captures the essence of Edwardian London with its Westminster Chimes and jingling harnesses of hansom cabs. The concert is at the Westmorland Hall, Kendal Lakes Leisure.

BRATHAY Langdale Marathan & Half Marathon takes place on Saturday (October 20). This stunning course takes in the Great Langdale and Little Langdale valleys with views of the surrounding fells. It has a reputation as one of the toughest marathons and half marathons in the UK because of the steep climbs. TO MARK the 100th anniversary of the advent of female suffrage in the UK, various Beatrix Potter places in the Lake District, Hill Top and the Beatrix Potter Gallery, Hawkshead, will be celebrating this remarkable lady's influential position as a strong, and female, member of the Cumbrian community. An exhibition, entitled 'The Right Sort of Woman' and featuring original artwork, handwritten letters and personal items, uncovers a lesser-known side to the well-loved children's author. Join Dorothy and Toto as she searches to find the wizard and return home under the guidance of Glinda the good witch. Of course, on her adventure she meets the Scarecrow, The Tinman and the Lion, who help her brave the journey and keep her faithful ruby slippers from being taken by the wicked witch.
