THE oldest man and woman to be born and still living in the village of Crook are celebrating their diamond wedding today.

George Taylor, 87, was born at the village's High Farm and Betty, 81, at nearby Latterbarrow.

Mr Taylor went to school in Crook while Mrs Taylor attended Winster, then Kendal High School.

They were neighbours, met locally and were married at St Catherine’s Church, Crook, on October 18 1958.

Following a honeymoon in Liverpool, they returned to the village and have farmed alongside each other all of their married life and still share a keen interest in the daily activities.

Although the farm is now run by their son, George, and his family, Mr Taylor enjoys passing on his skills to his young grandsons who are extremely keen on farming. Mrs Taylor plays an active role with the farm paperwork.

Mr and Mrs Taylor have, for much of their married life, shared a passion for competing in local agricultural shows.

Initially showing cattle, Mr Taylor then moved on to showing vegetables, poultry and eggs. Mrs Taylor competes with her baking and homemade wine. It is a hobby they still share today, alongside many other family members.

The couple have five children - Margaret, Brenda, Christine, Wendy and George - 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

They recently enjoyed a carriage driving ride as part of their diamond wedding celebrations. They are looking forward to a get together on the farm with family and close friends.
