MORECAMBE Bay's hospitals will be lighting up pink tomorrow (Friday) for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The signs and entrances of Kendal's Helme Chase Maternity Unit, the women's unit at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, and the South Lakes Birth Centre at Barrow's Furness General Hospital, will be lit by a rosy glow for a week to highlight the importance of breast screening.

Pink lights are also to shine out on Blackpool Tower and the Ashton Memorial in Lancaster, and staff at Morecambe Bay's hospitals are being encouraged to wear something pink to work tomorrow.

Proceeds will go to the north Lancashire and south Cumbria breast screening fund, which is run by the Bay Hospitals Charity to help ensure women receive the very best care and treatment.

Carly Taylor, breast screening navigator at the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We wanted to do something special this year to remind women across Barrow and South Lakes of the importance of attending their breast screening appointments."

She said: "One in eight UK women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and early detection is very important.

“Free NHS breast screening aims to detect breast cancer at a very early stage and provides free breast screening every three years for all women in the UK aged 50 to 70. Some women aged 47 to 49 and 71 to 73 will also be invited for screening.”
