A SMALL craft group has knitted 887 poppies, one for each of the men and women named on the Cenotaph in Barrow Park.

The group of four have been meeting regularly every Friday at Goodness Gracious Gifts in Barrow's indoor market to get the final numbers together.

Pauline Mccabe, 60, owner of Goodness Gracious Gift, said: “We made some poppies last year, but this time we wanted to do more.

“So in our small group, and with the help of some passer-bys, we thought we’d have a go.

“We also wanted each poppy to be more than just a flower so we decided to attach each one to a piece of square card, with their full name and regiment on.

“It’s been really touching to make them, particularly when you write their names.

“It takes just an instance, but all of a sudden you think about who that person was, what they did and all the difficult things they would have had to experience.

“It’s even more touching when you find repeated surnames as you can’t help but think about all the families that suffered.”

When asked why she wanted to do it, she said: “I remember when we saw knitted poppies pouring out of a church window and I remember how they caught people’s eyes, this is what we wanted to go for.

“We are slightly concerned that the amount won’t be able to fit on the wall outside our stall, but we really hope it has some impact.

“We’ve done a lot of charity things in the past, but hopefully this will stand out.”

All 887 poppies will be on display in Barrow Market Hall (Stall 77) from this Friday.
