THE number of electric charging points in the Lake District is going to be doubled from 30 to 60.

Lake District National Park chief executive Richard Leafe made the announcement at a meeting of the full authority in Kendal on Tuesday.

Park member Alan Barry said people were discouraged from using electric-powered cars because they were “petrified” of running out of electricity.

Mr Leafe also updated members on a bid the authority has made to the European Union for £4 million.

If successful, the authority hopes to roll out more initiatives as part of its 10-year-old Low Carbon Lake District project, which aims to tackle climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Mr Leafe said the authority hoped to hear a decision on the bid soon.

“I hope very much that it’s good news for us,” he said.

Member Neil Cumberlidge said it would be a fantastic achievement if the authority could net the £4 million grant.
