NUCLEAR disarmament campaigners from Cumbria and North Lancashire gathered in Kendal on Saturday.

They were seeking support for their call on the Government to support a global ban on nuclear weapons and to cancel Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons system.

Shoppers and others on Highgate were asked to sign CND’s petition supporting the ban. They emphasised that, under the Treaty, the text of which was agreed by 122 countries in July last year, the use of nuclear weapons will become illegal and that the replacement of the Trident system would be in breach of Britain’s international treaty obligations.

They also argued that Trident is, not only hugely expensive, but also militarily irrelevant in 2018, while nuclear weapons are detrimental to British security.

Philip Gilligan, from South Lakeland CND, said: "We need peace and security in our world, not threats of nuclear annihilation."

The petition is also available to sign online at the cnduk website and will next be available to sign in hard copy at the Green Fair in Lancaster on Saturday November 24.
