FOLLOWING on from an earlier letter about the air quality in Kendal, I was walking through the town's 'pedestrian' section from MacDonalds' up to the town hall and managed to count two vans unloading, one van with driver inside having a meal break, and four taxis waiting for trade - all with the engines running, pumping out diesel fumes.

I know the cold weather incites drivers to keep the heater on, but please have a thought to the air that the rest of us have to breathe, not to mention the effect this bad habit has on the global climate situation.

Is there no by-law about this? Doesn't the Highway Code (239) mention turning off engine when parked?
