Mr J Lambert (Letters, October 25, ‘Calm down over weather’) suggests that, because there have always been floods and heatwaves, global climate is not changing.

He is confusing short-term variations with a long-term trend.

The evidence for human-made climate change is increasingly strong. For example, 17 of the 18 warmest years in NASA’s 136-year record of global climate have occurred since 2001.

Climate change is forecast to cause melting ice and rising seas, more extreme weather (heatwaves, floods, droughts, cold spells), and shifting rainfall patterns.

Likely consequences are loss of coastal dwelling areas, mass human migration, worsening human health, damage to property and infrastructure, economic disruption, wildlife extinctions, and impaired agriculture and food security.

Not so much to be calm about.
