FURNESS General Hospital was on "security lockdown" for a period today after a sighting of a suspicious individual in the grounds.

Police were called at approximately 12:20pm following a report of a man seen in a field near the hospital with a suspected air weapon.

Staff and patients were kept inside and the hospital buildings were locked shut.

This included Barrow Day Nursery which is within the grounds of the hospital.

According to the police a full search of the area has been carried out and nothing suspicious has been found.

Police would like to reassure people that there is no perceived risk to the public at this time.

The hospital has now been re-opened.
