A KENDAL man has been jailed for assaulting his sister inside her own home in the town.

Liam Steven James Christian, 22, was locked up for 20 weeks earlier today after he admitted two charges. He pleaded guilty to assaulting both Demi May and Alan Ure during an incident at her Langdale Crescent home on the afternoon of September 29.

Carlisle Crown Court heard Christian was "in drink" when he went to the address. He argued with Miss May, pushing, pulling and dragging her, and then punching her to the face. He followed her around the property despite her attempts to get away, and also assaulted Mr Ure, causing him to bang his head and leg on a cupboard.

Christian was in breach of a suspended prison term at the time of the offending, but while in custody on remand had been taking courses aimed at curbing his alcohol use, the court heard.

Judge Andrew Jefferies QC imposed a nine-week jail term for the assaults, and ordered Christian, of Kirkland View, Kendal, to serve a further 11 weeks, consecutively, for breaching the previously suspended sentence.

Describing the defendant's offending against his sister, Judge Jefferies spoke of a "sustained and repeated assault".

*Christian had earlier denied an additional charge alleging that he threatened Mr Ure with a machete on the same date. Christian was found not guilty of that charge after the prosecution offered no evidence against him.
