HUNDREDS of people braved torrential rain to pay their respects to the fallen at Kendal War Memorial.
On the centenary of the Armistice, crowds packed the town centre in solemn silence to remember the servicemen killed in action.
Dignitaries including the Mayor of Kendal, Cllr Guy Tirvengadum, and Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron laid wreaths as a piper played ahead of the Last Post and two-minute silence at 11am.
That silence was impeccable observed by the crowd, both young and old, military veterans and cadets, with the only noise to be heard the one made by the torrential rain bouncing off umbrellas.
There was a further service at the Parish Church at 6pm to mark the centenary of the Armistice.
This included the Town Crier giving a special proclamation and the ringing of the church bells as part of the Battle’s Over National Tribute.
It also included the laying of special Thank You wreaths and a field of Remembrance poppy crosses.
And at 7pm a lone bugler returned in darkness to the War Memorial to play the Last Post before marching off into the distance, a touching end to a day of remembrance.
