Hairdresser David Clancy praises the town of Ulverston

I’VE been procrastinating a lot throughout November.

I’ve decided to join in with NaNoWriMo, which is National Novel Writing Month.

You’re supposed to write 1,600 words each day and by December 1 you have 50,000 words towards the first draft of a novel.

I started off with all guns blazing. However, by day three I had started with the excuses not to write.

Plus I’ve spent a lot of time staring out of my window overlooking Market Street.

Although this gazing and ruminating has inspired me somewhat. I got to thinking about just what a creative town Ulverston really is.

For such a small town there really are an awful lot of events run by some wonderfully artistic people.

For example, Jennie Dennett has just treated us to the candle-lit walk to mark Hallowe’en.

The month before she organised the town’s Lantern Festival.

Then, of course, there’s Mister Monster, Dave Crossley with the excellent Monster Monster rave held at The Coro each year. This is absolutely not to be missed if a dance floor full of zombies is your thing.

Dave also organises Another Fine Fest each year, when he transforms the whole of the town centre into a mini Glastonbury with street theatre and artists, DJs on in all the pubs and bands on stages throughout the town.

Not forgetting the comedy - The Laurel and Hardy Museum is always bursting with lots of comedy.

Obviously, there’s Jess Gilliam, with her brightly sparkling jackets and metallic jeans, who is the pride of the town with her world class performances.

Jess is as comfortable playing her sax in the Coro as she is in the Royal Albert Hall.

Another inspirational local is Zosia Wand, a playwright and novelist.

Zosia runs The Reading Room, a private library in the centre of town from which she holds a whole range of courses, of varying length, covering all aspects of creative writing.

This is not even mentioning the majority of the other festivals, exhibitions and literary events and the people behind them.

So, you see, even if I never do complete my NaNoWriMo project and just sit looking out of my window, at least I’ve got an amazing view.
